Continuation of ban on Live Animal Exports to Middle East

02 February 2022

Labor supports the continuation of the current ban on live sheep exports to the Middle East during the Northern Hemisphere summer.

Labor supports strong animal welfare standards, and we will have more to say on this issue over the coming months.

We believe that all animals should be treated humanely and that it is the responsibility of all governments, state and federal, to ensure that this is done.

To ensure the highest standards of animal welfare are maintained, governments and industry must remain vigilant and be guided by the best available science.

The draft report into the current ban on live sheep exports to the Middle East during the Northern Hemisphere summer has recommended that the ban continue. Labor supports the continuation on the ban based on the evidence contained in the draft report. If you have not already read the draft report, you can find a copy here.

Labor hopes that the Morrison Government listens to the evidence and continues the ban on live sheep exports to the Middle East during the Northern Hemisphere summer.

Labor has also called on the Morrison Government to do everything it can to ensure compliance with animal welfare standards.
