VIRGIN ANNOUNCEMENT ANOTHER HIT ON HUNTER AND PATERSON

05 August 2020

Virgin’s announcement today is another big hit for Australian aviation, and regional communities like the Hunter.

“With one in three jobs expected to go, I am deeply concerned this will result in a reduction of flights out of Williamtown,” Meryl Swanson said.

When Scott Morrison took the decision to refuse support to Virgin Australia he left the future of the airline up in the air.

In preferring a “market-led solution” to Virgin Australia’s difficulties, the Morrison Government has now ensured that thousands of workers will lose their jobs and the Hunter could lose flight.

“The announcement today of Virgin job losses coupled with the job losses already announced by Jetstar is a big hit to Williamtown airport and our local economy. Scott Morrison has clearly not done enough to support regional airports,” Meryl Swanson said.

In the face of government inaction, Labor commends Virgin Australia, the independent administrators and Bain Capital for protecting as many workers and as much of the airline as possible. We encourage them to work closely with unions and workers throughout this process.

“With continuing border closures, it is clear that the aviation sector will need support to prevent further avoidable job losses”.
