Labor's Position on Key Issues

Climate Change

January 29, 2019

The Labor Party is the party for strong action on climate change.

During the last Labor Government, we decreased carbon pollution by 11 per cent but under the Liberals, pollution has increased by 6 per cent.

The truth is that the Liberals have no climate policy and no way to contain, let alone reduce, Australia’s rising carbon pollution levels.

The Morrison Government’s own projections shockingly show emissions in 2030 will only be 7 per cent below 2005 levels, well short of the inadequate Liberals target of 26-28 per cent cut.

Confirming the Liberals have no effective climate change policy to bring emissions down in the future, the projections confirm total emissions are projected to grow from today’s levels by over 5 per cent to 2030.

In 2018 the Liberals walked away from any plan to cut pollution in the electricity sector, which is responsible for one third of all of Australia’s emissions and has the lowest cost of cutting pollution. Instead, they are willing to spend billions of taxpayers’ dollars on new, heavily polluting coal-fired power stations.

Labor has a renewable energy target of 50 per cent by 2030. You can read more about our plan here:

Labor is committed to cutting our carbon pollution by 45 percent on 2005 levels by 2030, and to reach net zero emissions by 2050, as is consistent with our obligations under the Paris Accords of keeping global warming to well-below 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels.

Labor will do what we need to do as a generation to ensure that we do as much as possible to not only implement the Paris Agreement, but more importantly to protect our children and our grandchildren, and generations beyond that, from the worst impacts of uncontrolled climate change. Over the coming months, we will again put out a very detailed policy that makes very clear what we intend to do sector by sector to contain and reduce carbon pollution.

Combating climate change is a Labor priority. It’s time the Liberals got out of the way.
